Obituary
Shirley Marie Williams was born on November 27, 1937, in Waco, Texas to the late Robert and Corene Whaley. She was raised in Waco and upon graduating from A.J. Moore High School, she attended Paul Quinn College.
Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age.
After much travel throughout Europe and the United States, she moved to Somerdale, New Jersey, where she became a member of Bethany Baptist Church
in August 1972.
For many years, she was employed by the church as a Maintenance Technician. She did her job with pride and meticulous care, always going the extra mile to ensure the offices were clean, tidy and well stocked with personal care supplies. Sister Shirley, as she was affectionately known, was always in the midst of the saints. A faithful member of Bethany, her heart for service and love for people was undeniable. She served in the Banquet, Hospitality, Food Bank and Nurses ministries. She volunteered annually for the Church Picnic, the Toy Drive and the Thanksgiving Giveaway. She was also a dedicated member of the Saint’s Alive Seniors Ministry.
Shirley had many hobbies, such as reading, baking, crossword puzzles, and watching game show TV. She was an avid sports fan, who loved football and basketball, but had a special place in her heart for baseball and the Philadelphia Phillies.
On May 3, 2025, early in the morning, Shirley answered God’s call to rest and peacefully made her triumphant journey back home into the arms of God.
She leaves to cherish her memory as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her two children, Gary Williams (Carole), Kathy Williams (Javan), two grandchildren, Monique Hughes (Kyle) and Gary Williams II (Desaree) two great-grandchildren, Paeton and Ethan; her BBC Church family and host of other family members and friends.
