The Life Story of
Quentin G. Still
Quentin Gerald Still, affectionately known as “Jerry,” was born on December 28, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Quentin J. and Ida G. Still.
A man of unwavering dedication and service, Quentin embarked on his military career in 1952 as an Army Combat Engineer in Korea, building bridges, roads, and clearing minefields. Three years later, he joined the New Jersey National Guard as a Nike Missile Technician with the 112th Field Artillery in Cherry Hill. His commitment to service continued in the Army National Guard from 1955 to 1974.
In 1974, Quentin joined the 177th Fighter Interceptor Group as a Flight Sergeant, and within seven years, his expertise and leadership led to his promotion to Chief Master Sergeant on January 1, 1981—becoming the first African American Chief Master Sergeant in the New Jersey Air National Guard. His dedication and excellence earned him numerous honors, including the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard Outstanding NCO Award (1979) and the Superior Performance Award (1988). Quentin was also recognized with the Air Force Commendation Medal, Korean Service Medal, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal and Air Force Training Ribbon over his course of thirty-nine years in the military.
Beyond his distinguished military career, Quentin was a man of many passions. He found joy in wine making, carpentry, fishing, hunting, karate, sword fighting, masonry, playing the guitar, capturing precious family moments with his camcorder and driving a clean Cadillac. A devoted member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Lawnside, NJ, for over 50 years, Quentin actively participated in weekly Bible study nurturing his faith.
Quentin was preceded in death by his brother Hartley J. Still, wives, Thelma N. and Fay J. and his cherished children, Thelma A. ("Puggs") and Quentin E. ("Mr. Q"). His memory lives on through his devoted children: Sheila, Bruce (Marnita), and Steffon. His grandchildren—Kimberly, Robin, Bruce, Brien, and Briana—along with his seven great-grandchildren – Tiffany, Marcus, Jailyn, Bruce Jr., Kristen, Brandon and Brien Jr., Domenick and Etosha Gran and a host of loving family and friends, will forever hold his legacy close to their hearts.
