Albert Henry Young, III departed this life on Sept. 10, 2025 at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital.
“Sonny” or “Big Al” as he was affectionately known by his friends and family, was born on April 18, 1942, the son of the late Albert H. Young, Jr., and Anna Mae Young.
He was raised in Moorestown, N.J., and educated in the Moorestown Public School system, including Moorestown High School. He later attended Lincoln Technical Institute.
Sonny was a proud military veteran, who courageously served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a heavy vehicle driver and held the rank of Specialist, E-4. He earned the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal
He married the former Carolyn Rogers. They raised their children Elissia and Darnell together and remained close friends years after their divorce.
There was nothing like family for Sonny, who had a big heart and a generous spirit. He relished the opportunity to spend time with his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews whenever he could. He enjoyed family gatherings, family reunions and any family time.
Darnell said his father would always greet him with open arms whenever he saw him, not physically, but figuratively. He said his dad was always happy to see him and made him feel that way every time they were together.
“Anybody can be a father but it takes a special man to be a dad and that’s who he was,” Darnell said.
Sonny worked for years as a trash truck operator for Fred Smith & Son in Westampton and was dependable and very friendly.
Darnell also recalls when he was 10 that his father taught him how to drive a trash truck. He would go out on routes with his dad and gained a strong ethic from those years of working with his dad in the summers in Burlington County. His father would entrust him to even drive the trash trucks through the neighborhoods.
His dad also worked for a moving company in Moorestown, and spent time as an auto mechanic for about eight years. The latter fed his passion and talent for fixing and tinkering with cars. He enjoyed racing cars at the Atco Speedway as well.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a welder at the shipyard in Philadelphia for Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company.
With each job that he had, he left a good impression on the people he worked with, because he always had a positive disposition, which stayed with him throughout his life.
He also had a strong faith and worshipped at Second Baptist Church in Moorestown in more recent years.
Sonny was loved by all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his kind spirit, generosity and humble nature.
While he was predeceased by his precious daughter Elissia Clayton, sisters Lena Groce, Dolores Whittaker and Marjorie Dallas, he is survived by his beloved son Darnell Young (Crissy); ex-wife and special friend Carolyn Young-Bean; son-in-law Charles Clayton; brothers James (Buddy) Young, Leroy Young, Theodore Young; sisters Shirley Watkins, Kathleen Young, Darlene Young; sisters-in-law Shirlene Young, Gwendolyn Young; brother-in-law Henry Watkins; grandsons Aaron Reid, Zavier Webb (Emily), Zakai Webb, CeQuan Young Clayton, Chance Clayton; special niece Augustina “Tina” Haliburton and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins.
