James Nelson, born on August 28, 1946, in Swedesboro, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. As the eldest of six children, James embraced his role with strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family. He is preceded in death by his brothers Jerome and Masey, his sister Anne, and his beloved wife, Dena, who passed on October 21, 2011.
James and Dena met and married in 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, faith, and devotion. Together, they were blessed with three children who became the center of their world.
A proud graduate of Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia, James completed his studies in 1965. Remarkably, he enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1964 while still in high school, serving honorably until his release in 1967.
After his military service, James returned to New Jersey and began working for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania. It was there that he discovered his passion for politics, which led to a distinguished career in county government. He served the Camden County Government for over eight years and was deeply involved with the Democratic Party. His dedication to public service included his role as a legislative aide to former Governor Jim Florio and as Chief Administrative Officer at Greater Philadelphia Health Action.
James was a devoted member of Grace Temple Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon. Alongside his wife, he worked tirelessly to support those in need, embodying the spirit of service and compassion. He also cherished his time with his Masonic brothers and was an active member of the Lodge.
Above all, James was a family man. His love and commitment to his children and grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pop Pop" were unwavering. He was known for his warm smile, generous heart, and the joy he found in spending time with family and friends.
James leaves behind his three children: Aaron Nelson, Michael Nelson, and Nikia Nelson; two daughters-in-law, Patricia Nelson and Jessica Nelson; and four cherished grandchildren: Alexa, Ayden, Emily, and Lucy. He is also survived by his sisters Bernice and Alesia, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and dear friends.
James Nelson's legacy of service, love, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
