Margaret Barther Obituary

Margaret was born on October 31, 1936, in Mount Holly New Jersey to the late David and Fannie Moore. After the passing of her mother when she was very young, Margaret was lovingly raised in Roebling and Bordentown under the care of her Pop, Minister Edmund Alexander.

Margaret received her education through the Florence Township school system. Her passion for baking led her to further her studies at Burlington County Institute of Technology, focusing on baking and honing in on her culinary skills.

On October 30, 1960, Margaret married Joseph H. Barther. After their marriage, the couple settled in Florence. Their first home was located on Second Street, situated above a dry-cleaning store, as the family grew, they moved to the Maplewood Homes and eventually settled on West Fifth Street, where they remained until Margaret's passing.

Margaret’s Christian journey began in her childhood home, where she was baptized at a young age. Her faith remained steadfast as she grew older, and she became a devoted member of Saint Peters Baptist Church under Reverend Hawkins. Within the congregation, Margaret took on active roles, serving as both a choir member and eventually becoming a mother of the church, demonstrating her deep commitment.

Margaret frequently volunteered for special events at the church, generously offering her time and talents which included cleaning the church on a regular basis alongside other members. She was well known for cooking, baking, and serving during church gatherings, and she delighted many with her wide variety of cakes—including coconut, pound, chocolate, strawberry shortcake, checkered and homemade rolls from scratch. Additionally, her cakes were loved by friends, relatives and members of the community. Many can attest to the love she put into baking. Her contributions reflected her deep faith and loving spirit.

Alongside her husband, she dedicated time and effort to raising funds for her church by organizing fried chicken dinner sales, primarily catering to Griffin Pipe factory in Florence in which was well anticipated and well received.

Margaret worked for Walson Army Hospital, Fort Dix New Jersey where she distinguished herself through her dedication and exceptional performance. Her commitment to her role did not go unnoticed, receiving several awards in recognition of her outstanding service. Margaret’s achievements at Walson Army Hospital reflected her strong work ethic which led to a supervising position. Her career ended in 1987 after an on-the-job injury.

Margaret’s life was marked by her unwavering compassion and generosity toward family, friends, and her community. She selflessly cared for nieces and nephews during important times in their lives. She was always willing to lend a helping hand—driving friends to doctor’s appointments and grocery stores and sending money to those who were homebound and in need of assistance.

Margaret faithfully supported Feed the Children and with each child’s photo she would display alongside those of her own family. Additionally, she supported Mercy Ship, Veterans Affairs, and Salvation Army. Above all, she cherished her grandchildren, caring for ten of them until they reached kindergarten, demonstrating her boundless love and commitment as a grandmother.

Margaret was always present at Bryant and Lionell’s football games, easily recognized by her signature white uniform as she stood along the fence. She was their most dedicated supporter and proudly considered herself their number one fan. Together with her husband, she made it a point to travel and attend some of their college games, demonstrating her unwavering love and encouragement and pride in their athletic endeavors.

Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph H. Barther, one brother Elwood L Moore; one Sister Elizabeth Elisha, Daughter Dorothy Dowling; three sisters in law Gladys Moore, Rosa Mae Gillis, Thelma Barther; one brother-in-law Willie C. Barther.
