Archbishop Gilbert Oliver Lyons, Jr. Obituary

The Most Reverend Archbishop Gilbert O. Lyons, Jr.

FEBRUARY 8, 1948 – NOVEMBER 25, 2025

Archbishop Gilbert “Gil” Oliver Lyons, Jr. departed this life on November 25, 2025, at The Samaritan Center at Voorhees, surrounded by family.

Gilbert Oliver Lyons Jr was born on February 8, 1948, to Gilbert and Thelma Lyons, who preceded him in death. Gilbert, more affectionately known simply as Gil, was raised in the city of Camden. He attended Saint Bartholomew and eventually studied to become an electrician in his early adulthood. In 1969, Gil heard his calling and joined the monastery following God’s plan by becoming a monk. Years later, that same plan led him to join the African Orthodox church, where he became an ordained deacon. His next calling to become a foster parent was equally dear to his heart.

As a Foster parent, he opened his doors for children in need of a home. He created a family with a trio of biological brothers, Reggie, Robert, and Edward Ross, up until their adoption. His initial experience as a foster parent inspired Gilbert to become an adoptive father for four unique sons in a home filled with love and the shared importance of worshiping the Lord.

In the African orthodox church, he rose through the ranks, becoming the First African Orthodox Archbishop of New Jersey. He then created his own church, the Primitive Orthodox church of America. Archbishop Gilbert sought to spread the word of God around the world with a ministry growing to global heights, with the Church of America continuing to grow to this day.

Aside from his love of the Lord and family, Gil loved teaching the deaf sign language, listening to the Supremes (especially his girl Diana Ross), vintage films like Wolf-Man and Dracula, and a good meal at one of his favorite buffets or diners.

Gilbert is survived by his sons Christopher, Neal (Kana), Jermell, and Robert. His grandchildren are LaTanya, Adrian, Janelle, Zealand, Jermell Jr., Noel, Zori, Dominic, and Kaleigh. His loving sister, Tanya, his nephew William (Bianca), and his great nieces, Kennedy and London. Along with his immediate family, Gil will be remembered by a host of godchildren and a massive collection of family, friends, fellow clergy, and his congregation.
