Mr. James Henderson was born in Winston Salem, NC on March 15, 1947 to the parents of James and Christine Henderson. His family moved to Philadelphia, PA in 1952 where he attended the James L. Claghorn Elementary School and Jay Cook Junior High School. They then moved to Williamstown, NJ in 1962. James attended Williamstown High School and graduated from WHS in 1965.
In 1966 he entered the US Army and reached the rank of Sergeant before receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1969. After returning home, he attended Glassboro State College (Rowan University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Special Education (1973). In 1981 he graduated from Antioch University with a Master of Arts Degree in Education. He returned to Glassboro State College and received his Principal and Supervision Certification in 1989.
From 1973 until 1974, Mr. Henderson taught a pre-vocational program for “special needs” students at Bridgeton Junior High School. He then chaired the high school component for the Camden Home for Children (a residential facility for boys) until 1978. Mr. Henderson subsequently moved to Charles Sumner Elementary School where he taught self-contained “special needs” students until 1984. Afterward he taught at the Camden Skill Development Center (1984-1988) and then became the Administrative Assistant (1988-1993. In 1994 he was appointed Vice Principal at the South Camden Alternative Middle School until leaving in 1996 to become the Acting Principal of James Fetters Alternative High School (until 1997). In 1997 he returned to South Camden Alternative Middle School where he became the Principal in 1999.
James was on the Camden County 4-H Advisory Board, NJ Special Olympics and he was appointed by the Governor of NJ to the Citizens Advisory Board for the Marie H Katzenbach School for the Deaf. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and was very active in his church (OBBC) as an Usher and Sound Room Coordinator.
James retired from the Camden School District in 2006. After retirement he took a position in the Williamstown School District as Director of Secondary Education where he helped to change the landscape of the Williamstown School District. He went on to become a member of the Monroe Township Board of Education.
On August 8, 1970 James married his high school sweetheart Mary Green of Williamstown, NJ. James leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years Mary, son Keith, daughters Keisha and Karla (Richard), grandsons Micah and Anthony, brother Donald (Joyce) and a host of nieces, nephews and many longtime friends and colleagues.
