Loretta Graves-Brewer Obituary
Loretta was united in marriage to her husband, Sonny, for 33 years. From this union, she was blessed with two sons, Rasheed and Jaleel, who were the pride and joy of her life. She also shared a special bond with her nephews Mark and Aaron; and her niece Danielle, who held a special place in her heart as the daughter she never had.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Sonny; her sons Rasheed and Jaleel; her sister Linda; her brother Harry (Deborah); her nephews Mark (Tamika) and Aaron (Tracey); her niece Danielle (Clarence); and a host of nieces and nephews: Anthony, Kyle, Niyah, Shane, Kiyana, Shanae, Aneisha, Markita, and Tahmir, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Loretta earned her education in the Philadelphia School District. She was a proud graduate of William Penn High School, Class of 1973, where she served as President of the Student Council Board and was an active member of the Debate Team. She continued her education at the University of Vermont, where she graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree, and later attended Cabrini College, where she earned her master’s degree in early childhood education in 2011.
Her passion for teaching and nurturing young minds led her to a lifelong career in education. Loretta began her work in education as a substitute teacher in 1980 while also working part-time at the R.W. Brown Community Center in their after-school program. She later became a full-time, permanent teacher in the public school system, where she taught first grade at Richmond Elementary School. Loretta was a dedicated and compassionate educator who truly loved working with children and made a lasting impact on every life she touched.
Loretta was a faithful and active member of St. Joseph Baptist Church for over 10 years, where she served diligently on the Trustee Board and as Administrative Assistant to Pastor Gregory Fleming. After relocating to New Jersey, she continued her faith journey at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She had a true gift for baking and was well known for her delicious cheesecakes, lemon cakes, and coconut cakes—treats that family, friends, and church members always looked forward to at gatherings.
Loretta will be remembered for her loving and caring spirit. She was always willing to help others—whether through a phone call to check in, a visit to brighten someone’s day, or bringing something thoughtful she knew would bring comfort. She had a deep love for her family and friends and treasured every moment spent together, especially during holidays and social outings.
She was known for her signature way of expressing love, often saying “smooches” to her sons and family. Loretta also had a vibrant sense of style and a love for shopping, especially adding to her Converse collection. She enjoyed going out with her friends regularly and living life with joy and grace.
Above all, Loretta embodied the essence of a virtuous woman, as reflected in Proverbs 31:10–31. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering love will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
