Minnie Pearl Johnson was born on January 4, 1928, in Abbeville, Alabama. She was the youngest of six children born to Mr. Edward Vaughn and Mrs. Minnie Mae Woods Vaughn. The family was later blessed with three siblings born to Mr. Edward Vaughn and Mrs. Blanche White Vaughn.
After graduating from Henry County Training School (HCTS), Minnie remained in Abbeville where she met and married Collis Johnson in 1950. Her son, Robert, was born in 1952. In 1957, Minnie and Robert moved to Newark, NJ where she lived with her oldest sister Edie Mae, while Collis served in the U.S. Army. Unfortunately, the union to Collis ended in divorce September 1963.
Beginning in February 1960, Minnie worked at North Jersey Developmental Center in Totowa, NJ as a house mother. She quickly became dedicated to her role and loved every child that came through the door for treatment. 30 years and 5 months later, Minnie Pearl Johnson retired August 1, 1990.
Shortly after moving to NJ, Minnie started attending Victory Tower Church of God in Christ (COGIC) under the leadership of (the late) Elder Ira Lawrence. She continued as a faithful member of Lockett Memorial COGIC, under the tutelage of (the late) Reverend Lockett, (the late) Elder William Paige, and (the late) Bishop Hershey Taylor, where she served diligently on the Usher Board and sung in the Precious Memory Choir.
In 2014, Aunt Minnie moved to Willingboro, NJ with her niece Yvonne Stancil, where she spent the last 12 years. Together they served in worship at God’s Assembly of Prayer in Willingboro, under the guidance of Pastor Carolyn Crouch. Her last earthly church was First Baptist Church in Willingboro with Pastor Gary Tum Suden.
Minnie wasn’t a worldly person, but she loved to shop. Whether looking or buying, it didn’t matter. At home, she loved studying the bible, good food, hot coffee, her crossword puzzles, and being as sassy as she wanted to be with a smile that lit up the room. She was quick to let you know what’s on her mind, if the food wasn’t seasoned, or if that coffee was cold.
Preceded in death by her son, Robert Johnson, in 1978, Minnie Pearl leaves to cherish her memory: sisters, Elizabeth Johnson-Augusta, GA and Cora L. Vaughn-Abbeville, AL; brother, Herbert Vaughn-Abbeville, AL; 3 nieces, 4 nephews, and a host of Grand, Great-Grand, & Great-Great-Grand, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends
