Iris E Swain Obituary

Our beloved IRIS ELEANOR SWAIN, age 90, peacefully entered eternal rest at Inspira Medical Center in Mullica Hill, New Jersey on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Surrounded by the love of family and the grace of God, she transitioned from labor to reward, leaving behind a legacy of faith, education, kindness, and unwavering love for her family.

Iris was born on May 17, 1936, in Broxton, Georgia, to the late Wesley Swain and Ola Swain. As a young girl, Iris parents relocated north, where she attended Glassboro Academy Street School and later moved to Cedarville, NJ and completed her elementary school years at Oakleaf Elementary School. She graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1956.

Believing that education was the key to opportunity, Iris continued her academic journey by earning an Associate of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Harcum Junior College in 1965. She later received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania) in 1968.

Before beginning her career in education, Iris worked in several local factories while attending college. Her determination and perseverance eventually led her to the classroom, where she first served as a substitute teacher in PA. In September 1976, she accepted a teaching position with the Woodbury School District. During her distinguished 35-year career, she taught students in grades one through six, spending many years as a beloved fourth-grade teacher. She retired in 2002, leaving an enduring impact on the lives of countless students, colleagues, and families.

To know Iris was to know a woman of quiet strength, wisdom, and grace. Though soft-spoken, she possessed a firm and nurturing spirit that earned the respect of everyone she encountered. She believed deeply in the power of education and encouraged her nieces and nephews to pursue college degrees, meaningful careers, and lives filled with purpose.

Family meant everything to Iris. She especially cherished the Christmas season, delighting in selecting thoughtful gifts for every member of the Swain family. Each gift was wrapped with love and care, making the holiday even more special. She also enjoyed hosting and attending family gatherings, where her famous homemade vanilla layer cake with rich chocolate icing quickly became a family favorite.

In her leisure time, Iris found joy in reading, discussing politics and current events, gardening, and tending to the beautiful flowers that filled her yard. She had a generous heart, always willing to help others and never missing an opportunity to celebrate life's special moments with those she loved.

She leaves to cherish her devoted brother, Joseph (Mary) Swain of Fairton, NJ, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, cherished friends, and all whose lives were enriched by her love, guidance, and generosity.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Swain and Ola Swain; her sisters Mae Swain, Emma (Reese Sr.) Baker and Molly Goodwin; and her brother Daniel (Cecelia) Swain.

Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we rejoice in knowing that Iris's life was one of purpose, compassion, and service. Her gentle spirit, steadfast love, and commitment to education will continue to inspire generations to come. "Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your Lord." Matthew 25:23
