SSusan Ann McCants was affectionately known to her family as “Sue.”

She was born on November 26, 1966. Susan was the fifth child born to Carol D. McCants-Jones (Watts) and Van Buren McCants.

Susan “Sue” McCants transitioned from this life on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 4:39 p.m.

Susan was educated in the Camden school system and was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1987. She was known as her class’s singer and was deeply involved in the performing arts, participating in productions such as Purlie and West Side Story. She also competed in an opera contest and, in the early 1990s, auditioned for the nationally televised talent competition Star Search in Philadelphia. Susan’s love for music was constant throughout her life. She was a member of the Woodrow Wilson Gospel Choir and later the Alumni Choir, performing at many gospel events under the direction of Mrs. Ellerbe. Known to her family as an anointed psalmist and songbird, Susan always shared her God-given gift of singing willingly and wholeheartedly.

After high school, Susan began a 30-year career with Friendly’s Restaurant in Marlton, New Jersey. She started as an assistant cook and worked her way up to Head Cook and Supervisor before retiring. Following her retirement from Friendly’s, she continued working at Arby’s Restaurant in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.

In early 1992, Susan became a member of Faith Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, where she remained a faithful member for more than 30 years under the pastoral leadership of Superintendent Shelton Neal. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in the early 1990s and later received the Holy Spirit. During her years at Faith Holy Temple, Susan devoted herself to many ministries and auxiliaries. She served on the Usher Board and Hospitality Board, as Young Adult Choir President, and as a member of the Camden District Choir, Senior Choir, Faith Holy Temple Morris Neal District Choir, and the Morris Neal District Recording Choir under the direction of Evangelist Gennell Moore. She was also a faithful member of the church’s Young Women’s Christian Council.

Susan had an undying love for her family. She was known for spoiling her nieces and nephews and played a tremendous role in raising and nurturing many of them. To many, she was not only an aunt but also a mother figure whose love, guidance, and presence helped shape their lives. Susan enjoyed cooking, decorating, and especially shopping. Gift-giving was one of her all-time favorite hobbies, and she took great pleasure in finding something special for the people she loved. She was also a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and proudly cheered for her favorite team.

For many years, Susan worked diligently alongside her big sister and other family committee members to make their family reunions successful and memorable. She helped research the family’s legacy and interviewed senior family members to gather important facts and stories about their family history so those treasures could be preserved and shared with future generations. Susan also served as the Family Reunion Entertainment Chairperson, ensuring plenty of fun, games, activities, laughter, and enjoyment for everyone. She directed and sang in the family gospel choir and never hesitated to share her many God-given talents.

Susan was preceded in death by both of her parents, Carol D. McCants-Jones (Watts) and Van Buren McCants; her stepfather, Joseph Jones Jr.; her nephew, Duane McCants, great-niece, Ya’Jiyah McCants; and her great-great-niece, Lyric Renee Sellers.

Susan leaves to cherish her memory her loving sisters, Rosalie Brown (Garry), Debra Alexander (Clyde), and Joann McCants; and her brothers, Bruce McCants (Dolores) and Eric McCants. Her memory also lives through her nieces and nephews: Bryan, Dekisha, Tasha, Eric, DeShawn, Demetrius, Danielle, Devante, Bruce, and Josiah. Twenty-four great-nieces and nephews, five great-great-nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family members and loved ones.

We will forever cherish her loving spirit, beautiful voice, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to family. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her legacy of faith, family, music, love, and service will live on through the generations. May she rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord.
