Obituary of Ethel Lee Johnson
Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ethel Lee Woodberry Johnson was born on August 11, 1914 in Tallahassee , Florida. She went home to be with the LORD on Sunday, November 27, 2016. “E.J” as she was lovingly called was a very spiritually guided person. God was always first in her life!
She moved to New Jersey during the early 50’s seeking employment. She was employed by Seabrook’s, P.J. Ritters, Tedesco and Venice Maid. During the Civil Rights Era she would often send money home to Tallahassee, Florida to help with the struggle.
Mother Johnson was blessed with longevity of life because of her dedicated faith, obedience and trust in God. She was known as “Praying Sister Johnson!” Her happiest times were in church praising God. She was a member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years! She was the founder of the Missionaries and sang on the choir. She also started a small missionary club in her home. She was very active until her health began to decline.
Ethel’s pastime consisted of crocheting and gardening. She worked in her garden until she was in her 90’s… raising peanuts, sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, okra, string beans, squash, collard greens and mustard greens. Many of these vegetables were canned for the winter. She often shared her bounty with neighbors and friends. She also loved watching baseball games! She knew every team and all the players.
Ethel Johnson leaves a legacy of precious memoires and unconditional love. Mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and great-great grandmother… we celebrate, love and thank you for being the matriarch of our family! As the matriarch of the family she will be greatly missed. Ethel leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters; Clementine Russell and Dorothy Davis, six grandchildren; Ronald Mounts, Reginald Davis, Valarie Hall(Martin), Jackie Goldsboro (Carlton) and Lisa Kates, 13 great- grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
