Life Story

Odell Thompson was born on July 4, 1939, in Kershaw, South Carolina, to Nannie Mae Thompson and Louis Thompson. He was the knee baby of five siblings: Rose Eva, Mary Alice, Louis, John M and Otis Thompson.

Odell attended Kershaw Elementary School and later migrated to Englewood, New Jersey, around 1959. In

Englewood, he met his beloved wife, Mattie Belle Gause. They were blessed with three daughters: Brenda Renee Thompson in 1962, Glynis Anita Thompson in 1965, and Odetta Deavon Thompson in 1967.

In 1966, Odell was hired by the Englewood Department of Public Works & Recreation. His responsibilities included maintaining the grounds for community spaces, schools, and city buildings. Odell was also a dedicated business owner, founding “Odell Thompson Landscaping,” where he employed family members and community residents. Among his notable customers were influential figures in the music industry, including the legendary Sylvia Robinson and artists like The Isley Brothers.

Odell loved his family and the City of Englewood, where he bought his first home, raised his family, and

dedicated nearly 30 years of service. His unwavering commitment was recognized when he received an award for “Outstanding Service,” particularly for his role in assisting with local crime prevention. He retired from the Englewood Department of Public Works & Recreation in 1988.

Odell was deeply respected in Englewood for his strong work ethic & dedication to the community. Known for his devotion to his family, he affectionately referred to his daughters as “my three little darlings” and “my sugar foots.” For years, he could be seen plowing snow in the community, skillfully operating heavy equipment and

machinery, even during challenging weather.

Daddy loved his family and The City of Englewood. Later in life, Odell made the decision to relocate to South Jersey, joining his daughters (Brenda Thompson, Glynis Thompson, and Odetta Thompson), granddaughters (DiJan Thompson and Faith Harvey), and great-granddaughter (Genesis Thompson). The King of Kings and The Lord of Lords.

Odell Thompson’s legacy of love for his family, dedication, hard work, and commitment to community service will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
