Obituary of Eva Jones
Please share a memory of Eva to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eva Mae Grayson Jones was the second child born to Ollis and Jettie B. Dixon Grayson. She was born on February 18, 1933, in Dixons Mill, Alabama.
Eva graduated from Merango County High School and attended Alabama State University. As a college student, Eva participated in the Civil Rights Movement, and was often a part of protests and marches organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
She moved to Vineland, New Jersey and in 1955 married the late Dozier Jones. They were blessed with six children—Andrew, Gary, Eunice, Gwen and twin sons, Martin and Marvin.
Eva was talented and held several jobs before arriving at Durand Glass in Millville, NJ. After 16 years of dedicated service, she retired from that company.
She loved puzzles and would often sit and spend hours putting them together. Eva was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking, especially around the holidays.
Eva was a member of the St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church, Vineland, NJ where she served on several ministries—the Ushers Board, Trustee, member of the Gospel Choir, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer. She served as Treasurer for 30 plus years and was the current Treasurer. She especially enjoyed being an usher and singing in the choir.
She was a “proud grandmom” and enjoyed boasting on the accomplishments of her grandchildren.
A kind and loving mother and grandmother, Eva leaves behind a legacy of love: Gary Jones and wife, Donna of Alexandria, VA, Gwen Drew and husband, Harry of Bear, DE, and twin sons, Rev. Marvin Jones, Sr. and wife, Michele of Mebane, NC; Martin Jones of Vineland, NJ; and a son-in-law, Alton Leon Alford, Sr. of Wyoming, MI. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Additionally, Eva is survived by two sisters, Ruby Ellerbe of Selma, AL and Dorothy Tobin of Phoenix, AZ: four sisters-in-law, Annie Grayson, Caroline Grayson, Josephine Patterson and Geneva Sewell, and one brother-in-law, Curtis Coates. Also left to cherish fond and precious memories of Eva is a special friend and companion, Mr. Thomas Short, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dozier Jones, a son, Andrew Jones, and a daughter, Eunice Jones Alford.
A legacy of love, kindness, grace and service—she will always remain in our hearts.
