Carmen Edelmira Johnson was born on November 23, 1931 in Panama City, Panama to the late
Arturo Ellis Sr. and Eula Duff. She was the oldest of four children. Carmen went to be with her Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ on October 20, 2016.
During her childhood years in her native country of Panama, she loved to spend time in the
Country with her grandparents on the island of Bocas Del Toro, where her extended family was
located. Carmen completed her highest level of education at the University of Panama where she
obtained her degree in accounting. Carmen also graduated from the Philadelphia College of Bible studies In 1997.
Carmen married her Soul Mate, Robert L. Johnson Sr. in 1954 in the Balboa Panama Canal Zone. They
were married for 49 years until Robert departed this earth in 2003. From this union they had 5 children
Louisa, Ethel, Robert Jr., Carmen and Arlene.
Carmen dedicated her life to Jesus Christ, her Lord & Savior and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist
Church under the leadership of Pastor Clay. She was very active in her church and held many positions
over the years.
Carmen held several positions within the community, such as an interpreter of Spanish for migrant workers, Director of the Head Start program in Glassboro, worked at Gloucester County College teaching basic Spanish. She served as the treasurer of the Greater Glassboro Commerce. She was the President of
the Library association for the improvement of the Glassboro library. She served on the election poles,
and volunteered on the ambulatory service.
Carmen worked at Penn Foods of Philadelphia as an accountant, and was last employed by the Glassboro Board of Education, where she was the payroll accountant. She retired from the Board of education in 1994 after 26 years of service.
Carmen was a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s clubs Inc., and Youth Affiliates. In 1964 Carmen joined the Glassboro Orchid club which is affiliated with the National Association of Colored Women’s club Inc.. Carmen held many positions and dedicated her skills and time to the
advancement of the organization.
Carmen leaves to cherish her memories, her children Louisa Lucas (Benjamin), Ethel Norton (Thomas),
Robert L. Johnson Jr. (Brenda), Carmen Graves (Leonard), and Arlene Ferrer (deceased) (Hector).
one brother Arturo Ellis Jr., one sister Margarita Samms . Five Sister in laws, Arlene Johnson, Edith King, Beatrice King, Geraldine Grier and Mardicruz Ellis. Two brother in laws, Calvin King and Lenardo Samms. Twelve grandchildren, Corie Higgs (Omar), Dawyne Johnson, Robert L. Johnson III (Synita), Rochelle Johnson, Thomas Norton Jr., Leonard Graves Jr., (Andrea), Benjamin Lucas Jr., Louisa Graves, Brittany Johnson, Lenard Norton, Elida Ferrer, and Gabriel Johnson. Sixteen great grandchildren and 1 great great grand daughter and a host of Neices, Nephews, and God children.
