Obituary of Benzenell J Owens
Benzenell Johnson Owens was born on June 7, 1941 in Norwood, Georgia to the late McClinton Johnson and Viola Johnson (Pitts). Nell, as she was affectionately called, was the oldest child of six children. Nell passed into her new life on June 17, 2017.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Union Baptist Temple under the leadership of Rev. Robert W. Davis. She was a member of the Intermediate Choir and the Junior Usher Board.
She was educated in the Bridgeton Public School System and was a graduate of Bridgeton High School, Class of 1960.
Nell married her sweetheart, John Owens on October 16,1965. From that union three children were born: John, Pamela and Renee.
Over many years Nell was employed with several clothing factories in the Bridgeton area which included Theaber and Major Clothing Inc. Nell was also employed by the Vineland Developmental Center. While under their employment, she was a Residential Living Specialist at a group home. She retired in 2007 due to her illness.
She was an enthusiastic collector of cookbooks, African American Art and she loved writing recipes! You would always find her and her mother at flea markets and yard sales. Nell adored spending time with her children and grandchildren. Nell enjoyed watching gospel programs and listening to gospel music. Nell found joy in reading her pocket Bible and her favorite scriputure was Psalm 23. She truly loved the LORD!
She leaves to cherish her memory in celebration of her life two daughters; Pamela Owens of Bridgeton, New Jersey and Renee Kelly (Darrell) of Atlantic City, New Jersey, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her mother; Viola P. Johnson of Bridgeton, New Jersey, five sisters; Jennie Fetress, Gussie Price (Teddy) , Shirley Taylor of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Essie Collins (Willie) of Vineland, New Jersey and Louise Johnson-Field of Mount Laurel , New Jersey, godbrother; Samuel Seabrooks of Bridgeton, New Jersey and goddaugher; Ella R. McDowell of Bridgeton, New Jersey. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her father; Deacon McClinton Johnson, her husband, John Owens and her son John McClinton Owens, Jr.
We, the family, will miss her deeply. The love will fill our hearts, minds and spirit with fond memories that will last forever. Nell we love and miss you!
