“The Oak Tree”

A mighty wind blew night and day.
It stole the Oak Tree’s leaves away.
Then snapped its boughs
and pulled its bark
until the Oak was tired and stark.
But still the Oak Tree held its ground
while other trees fell all around.
The weary wind gave up and spoke,
How can you still be standing Oak?”
The Oak Tree said, I know that you
can break each branch of mine in two,
carry every leaf away,
shake my limbs and make me sway.
But I have roots stretched in the earth,
growing stronger since my birth.
You’ll never touch them, for you see
they are the deepest part of me.
Until today, I wasn’t sure
of just how much I could endure.
But now I’ve found with thanks to you,
I’m stronger than I ever knew.
Just like the might “Oak Tree” Cynthia Wright, stood strong and endured the storms of life and gracefully continued to be fully present for those fortunate enough to know her. Also like the Oak Tree, Cynthia’s deep roots gave her great passion for the things that mattered most to her. She was passionate about her faith, supporting her community, her love for animals, particularly cats, and about championing the cause of higher education, especially for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She was a staunch supporter and active alum of both Cheyney and Tuskegee Universities. Despite dealing with her own personal storms she never complained, was always remarkably joyful, positive and kind. Her deep roots gave her great resolve as she remained committed, engaged and served throughout her medical challenges. As the chair of the hospitality committee for the Philadelphia Tuskegee Alumni Club, Cynthia took great pleasure in sending birthday cards and other greetings to help brighten the day of others. Similar to the Oak being tested by the storm winds, yet continuing to provide shade and remain as a symbol of strength, Cynthia’s generous spirit led her to give of her resources to many students in support of their educational pursuits, thereby giving shade to help make easier the path for others as they journey along. Cynthia’s smile, laughter, and sweet spirit will be sorely missed. Her legacy of strength, kindness, and generosity will be kept in our hearts forever.

Ms. Wright was a very special fellow worshipper at our Church, Mount Airy United Fellowship. She helped my daughter with advice and financially with college expenses; and I know she helped many more. A lot to say; many good conversations over the years.
