Please share a memory of Joyce to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joyce Ann Dodson Flores, the second daughter of George and Vernice Dodson was born February 18, 1948 in the Bronx, New York. Joyce attended and graduated from Morris High School in 1965 having studied nursing. Joyce decided to fulfill her life long passion and furthered her education at Queensboro Community College, where she obtained her nursing degree. Also fulfilling a very strong patriotic desire, Joyce served in the United States Army Reserve from 1992-1999 as a 2nd Lieutenant. Joyce knew and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age, and was a member of Victory Baptist Church in the Bronx where she served on the adult choir. Shortly after high school, she met and married Wilfredo “Sonny” Flores. This union produced nine children. The young couple later moved to Far Rockaway, Queens where Joyce reared and raised her children while her husband worked at the U.S. Postal Service from which he eventually retired. The couple eventually moved and settled their family to Wilingboro, New Jersey. Joyce loved to drive long distance road trips to visit family and friends from her past whom she held in high regard throughout her life. She traveled abroad to places such as Africa and Italy to name a few. Having excelled in her profession as an RN Supervisor, Joyce worked in various healthcare facilities such as Cooper Hospital and Avista Healthcare to name a few. She was loved and admired by co-workers where she worked and retired from Trenton Psychiatric State Hospital. Joyce went to be with the Lord, after losing her battle with breast cancer, on Sunday morning, November 1, 2020. She was surrounded by her loved ones in the comfort of her home. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents George and Vernice Dodson, her sister Bessie, a brother George Jr., stepmother Elaine, step siblings Sherilyn and Mark, her beloved daughter Ivy and granddaughter Lisa Angel. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 53 years, Wilfredo “Sonny” Flores, four daughters, Diana, Lisa, Thea and Bessie; four sons, Michael, David, Phillip and Christopher; twelve grandchildren, Kenneth, Anthony, Victor, Vincent, Lisa Christina, Lisona “Little”, Victoria, Veronica, Daniel, Da’vid, Atrayu and Isaiah; five great grandchildren, Keaidan, Malachi, Laylanni, Leidon, and Lyfe; one sister, Marva Dodson-Pridgen (Wilmington, NC), one brother David Ivan Dodson (Mount Vernon, NY), one Aunt Rita Anderson (Harrisburg, PA), one Uncle Bobby Long (Martinez, GA), Minister Claude Foy III and the Foy Family (New Bern, NC); five sister-in-laws, Winnie, Lucy, Shirley, Nancy and Sharon; and three brother-in-laws, Willie, Carlos and Nat.
