Obituary of Joseph Brunson

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Brunson was born to the late Thomas and Lula Brunson on May 12, 1939, in Greeleyville, South Carolina. He received his education from Williamsburg Training High School. Joseph lived a servant’s life that spanned several states. He was fun-loving, loved to tell jokes, and enjoyed driving long distances. He loved to help people but was quick to let them know that he did not take any stuff. He gained pleasure from his hobbies of gardening and fishing. In 1974, Joseph met the love of his life, Sarah. Together, through their union, they built a life of love, service, and sacrifice. Joseph rededicated his life to Christ and was baptized in 2001 at the Redeem Baptist Church by Reverend Wendell Johnson. From the time when he got baptized until his health began to fail, Joseph served faithfully including under the leadership of Pastor Larry G. Patrick. As a result of his dedication and faithfulness to his God and his church, Joseph was ordained as a Deacon in November 2009, and began living a life dedicated to the ministry. While he eagerly embraced his many responsibilities, he mostly enjoyed management of the Transportation Ministry where he drove the church van. Deacon Brunson received many compliments regarding his courteousness and promptness from the passengers who rode with him. Joseph worked for many years in construction until he obtained employment with Avis Car Rental in 1982. It was there where he remained until his retirement in 2005. Joseph enjoyed the years of his retirement immensely, especially when he received a congratulatory proclamation from then President George W. Bush. Ten years ago, Joseph became ill and was no longer able to care for himself. It was then that his wife and life partner began a ministry of care dedicated to him. She remained by his side providing for his every need. While Joseph slowly began to forget his family, his family never forgot him. The love and concern that Joseph bestowed upon his family was ever present as he departed this life. Joseph leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his family. He taught his family the importance of friendship, hard work, and toiling the earth. The art of gardening and fishing were his most enjoyable hobbies and that legacy continues within his family. Joseph was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Raymond Green and Mansel Brunson, 3 Sisters: Annie Brunson, Mary Keels and Ida Mae Rollerson, 2 brothers-in-law, William Carr, and Moses Dukes. Joseph leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Sarah; 1 son, Albert (Millason) Johnson of Sicklerville, NJ; 4 daughters: Cheryl (Leon) Howard of Sicklerville, NJ; Karen (Howard) Moore of Laurel, MD; Venita (Derek) Huger of Philadelphia, PA; and Almetta Treadway of Powder Spring, Georgia; 1 brother: Lee Ernest (Dora) Green of Greeleyville, SC; 2 sisters: Flora Carr of Troy, NY; Pearlie Mae Dukes of Troy, NY; 23 grandchildren, one of whom he raised as his own, Latoya Doub; 26 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved Church Family. Lovingly Submitted, The Family
