Obituary of Gwendolyn Miles

Please share a memory of Gwendolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gwendolyn Nowell Miles entered this world on August 13, 1948 to the shock and surprise of her parents, Virginia Nowell and William A. Knox. Philadelphia General Hospital doctors and nurses, her siblings and all of the neighbors on the 1400 block of South Taylor Street in South Philadelphia were overjoyed when they heard the unexpected news that Gwendolyn and her twin brother Robert had burst on to the scene. Gwen always reminded Bobby that, “I am the oldest because I came first!” Gwendolyn attended South Philadelphia High School and graduated from the Job Corps with Clerk Typist and Cosmetology certificates. She worked as a typist at Quartermasters. In June 1972, Gwen married Daniel T. Miles who pursued her before and after his tour in the Marines. Daniel convinced Gwen to work full time in their home raising their two sons; Daniel and Lamont. Gwen was a masterful housewife. She was a devoted mother, wife, and an exceptional cook. Regrettably, Gwen’s husband Daniel and her son Lamont preceded her in death. Gwen‘s jovial presence, smile, and laughter lit up every room she entered. She was the life of every social event and family gathering. Gwen loved music! She especially loved to sing and dance to Smokey Robinson! She knew every word to every song Smokey ever sang. Gwen did not hesitate to torture our ears with her singing. Awesome Aunt Gwen was a confidant, advisor, and hanging partner while still keeping all of her nieces, nephews, and adopted cousins in line. They loved her! They will miss her! Gwendolyn’s memory will be cherished by her son, Daniel (Ayesha-Tai); grandson, Maleek Armstrong; five great-grandchildren; Loving Goddaughter: Markita Anderson, brothers, Irving, Robert and William; sisters, Jacqueline, Marlene, and Renee; nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friend, Marion Alston
