Obituary of James A Koonce Sr.

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James A. Koonce, Sr. of Deptford, NJ our loving father, brother, and uncle went home to be with the Lord on April 23, 2021. James was born in Cape May, NJ to Raymond and Juanita Koonce on November 19,1952. Jimmy attended Cape May and Camden City Public Schools. He was a known entity at the “Castle on the Hill!” Jimmys' work history included various occupations. He was a successful businessman and taught others about investing and real estate. He was especially proud of a position he held at the University of Pennsylvania in the Facilities Department. Jimmy enjoyed an uncomplicated, carefree lifestyle which made him happy. He spent many years living in Nashville, Tennessee. Jimmy and Faye Valentine were married and from this union two children were born James Jr. and Farrah. He also has a daughter Jameelah. He ensured that his children loved each other and shared a special bond. Jimmy was a child of God. He loved the Lord and had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Jimmy carried his Bible everywhere. He memorized many verses but his favorite was Psalm 23 - The Lord’s Prayer. Jimmy was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and loving spirit. Everyone knew not to mistake his kindness for weakness! Jimmy would tactfully set any and everyone straight. He was direct and able to communicate with people in ways others could not. He never complained, he just went with the flow when it was “convenient for him”! He loved listening to jazz music and relaxing with friends. He enjoyed the beach, swimming, being outdoors, and walking. Often people thought he was homeless because he walked aimlessly for hours. Jimmy was a staunch advocate for civil rights, social justice, the Black Power Movement, and the elevation of Black people. He strongly believed in elevating our worth - financially, educationally, personally and professionally. Jimmy sustained a life changing injury in 2006. This injury drastically altered his life but never took away his love of the Lord, his family and friends. Jimmy was extremely close to his family and had special bonds with them. He had a special relationship with his niece Denise (Niecy) and Goddaughter Tawana. Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Juanita Koonce and his brother William. He is survived by his former wife Faye, his children James Jr. (Lisa), Farrah, and Jameelah. His grandchildren Taylor, James, Jayvion, Mason, Shardae, and Montgomery. His sisters Juanita, Josephine (Odell), Novella, Rayann, Lydia, and his brothers Raymond (Margie), Greg (Tammy), and Franklin (Cheryl), lifetime friend Glenda and her son Kareem, the Valentine Family, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
