Obituary of George Howard Stevenson, Sr

George H Stevenson Sr. departed this life on Friday July 9, 2021 in Voorhees New Jersey. George, the eldest son of Mary and Albert Williams (deceased), was born on August 27, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA. George, a resident of West Philadelphia was educated in the Philadelphia School District. He received his Holy Confirmation at Calvary Episcopal Church under the leadership of Father Thomas C. Logan. George enlisted in the U S Army and served in the Korean War era. George was stationed in several locations; in Alaska as a Harbor Craft Detachment Seamen, in Virginia, in Texas and finally in San Francisco, CA. George military service spanned from 1954-1957 and was Honorable discharged as a Tug Boat Operator SP3 (T). George was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter M1 while serving his country. Once discharged from the Army, George married his childhood sweetheart, Jane Dozier, and from that union 3 children were born (George Jr, Denise and Constance). He later remarried the love of his life, Madeline White (deceased) in Alexandria, VA. George devoted 30 years of service to the Philadelphia Transit Company (PTC) which is now known as the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA). George started his career as a trolley operator (route 23) and then he gravitated to driving bus(es). George could be seen wheeling the “GREEN HORNET”, aka the bus(es), throughout many West Philadelphia streets. George bus routes included the G, D, 52, 42, and E which were all dispatched out from the Callowhill bus depot (59th and Callowhill St). During the harsh winters of the late 60’s and 70s, George was called on to drive the massive snowplows to clear the larger streets that affected the bus routes. To clear Spruce Street in the winter season was no problem when George was driving the snowplow. His dedication to service was one of the traits he valued at SEPTA. Later George transferred into the painter department while his final position was on the Elevated Train Line (EL) as a cashier. With George’s encouragement, he was able to secure an employment opportunity for his son, little George. George eventually retired from SEPTA and found his forever home in South Jersey with Madeline. George was a fantastic handyman and was meticulous when it came to painting. George loved to travel with Madeline to many exotic locations like Haiti, St Maarten, Jamaica, Bahamas and Ocean City, MD. George’s wife, Madeline, preceded him but they are now happily reunited. George leaves to mourn three children: George H Stevenson Jr (Evyonna), Denise Mundy (Derrick preceded in death), Constance Cotton (Stacey), one sister Bertha Cobia, one brother John Williams (Wendy), four sister-in-laws Delores S Norris (Rasool Satchmei), Salome B Stephens, Mary Katherine Farrow, Barbara P Coleman (Larry); seven grandchildren Kerrie Porter (Claude), Brenton Mundy, Janena Mundy, Asia Stevenson, Asante’ Stevenson, Markus Stevenson, Matthue Cotton, three great-grandchildren William Alex Mundy, Jada Mundy, David Maxwell Porter; a well as a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, family and friends. Private graveside service will be held at Brigadier General William C Doyle Memorial Cemetery.
