CELEBRATION OF VERLIVIAN LAURIE SCOTT-MARS’ LIFE Verlivian Laurie Scott Mars was born January 11, 1933, in Statesboro, GA to Jessie and Lillie Laurie. The eldest of three children, Shirley Strickland, then Robert Laurie (who preceded her). They moved to Savannah, GA for a few years, in her teens she moved to Detroit, MI where she graduated high school. Then met and married John Scott in 1958. Gave birth to two sons Anthony Kevin ( who preceded her) and John Eric. They moved to Newark, NJ in the early 1960s where she was employed with Greystone Mental Institution. She gave birth to her only daughter Wanda Evette. Verlivian has always been a high achiever. She obtained her Associate's Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, and her Master’s Degree in Sociology. In 1970 she was employed at North Jersey Community Union as a teacher/social worker in the daycare center. She was promoted to Director of the C.E.T.A Senior Initiative Work Experience program where she worked for over 20 years. Verlivian also worked for the Division of Youth and Family Services as a Case Manager for 5 years and at the VA Hospital as a Social Worker obtaining a high grade there. Her first retirement was in 1995. After being divorced for over 20 years she reunited with an old friend (Mr. Franklin Mars) remarried and moved to Texas in 1995. Verlivian decided to become a counselor for a youth program. Some years after, she became the Director of a Senior Citizen Day Program in Port Author, TX. She was a member of a wonderful church that was pastored by Dr. and Mrs. Sampson. Verlivian was very active in her community and loved by many. Verlivian never met a stranger so people that were friends quickly became family to her. In 2003, she returned to South Jersey to live with her daughter and family. She continued working in the community until finally retiring in 2007. Verlivian joined Solid Rock Worship Center where Pastors Amir and Aughtney Khan served. She became friends with many who are now family. In 2019, she moved to Dover, DE with her daughter. Verlivian was known as the International mother. She was truly loved by her Family/ Friends and will be dearly missed. Verlivian had such a sense of humor and loved every one! On August 3, 2021, the Lord saw fit to call Verlivian home. She leaves to cherish her memory, her Sister Shirley Strickland, her Daughter Wanda Scott, her Granddaughters Tsilka Brooks, Safiah Chandool, Rafiah Persaud. Her 5 Great Granddaughters and one Great Grandson and a host of Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, and Friends. Sorrowfully Submitted, The Family
