Obituary of Eugene Homer Davis

Please share a memory of Eugene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary Deacon Eugene H. Davis was born to the late Charles and Lucy Davis on October 9, 1935, in Camden, New Jersey. He peacefully transitioned surrounded by loving family members on June 20, 2024. Deacon Davis grew up and received his education in the Camden City School System and attended Camden High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years on July 24th, 1953. He often talked about his time while stationed in Japan and his countless flights on the C-124 aircraft. During his teenage years in school, he met the love of his life, Ella Mae Langston who he affectionately called “Ellie”. They married and were blessed with seven children: Jacqueline, Patricia, Shirley, Eugene II, Pamala, Brian Keith, and Charles. They shared an agape love, which is a type of love that is unconditional, sacrificial, and selfless. It is often considered the highest form of Christian love. They remained highly devoted to one another during their marriage which lasted nearly 61 years until Deaconess Davis went home to be with the Lord in 2014. Deacon Davis accepted Christ at a young age and was a dedicated member of New Philippian Baptist Church along with Deaconess Davis for over 40 years. He served on the Deacon Board, sang in the Choir, taught Sunday School, and was a Trustee. Deacon Davis was also an active and dedicated member of the South Jersey Baptist Deacon Union and the Bethany Baptist Association Laymen’s Movement for many years. He found great joy in worship, studying God’s Word, and witnessing to the community. His favorite hymn was "I'm So Glad Jesus Lifted Me." He also related intimately to the song “Amazing Grace” which intensified his Love for God, who is committed to saving the wretched. The 27th Psalm was one of his favorite scriptures he loved to recite. He attended Church Services faithfully until his transition home. Deacon Davis was a true man of God who is now experiencing a well-deserved rest with His savior. In 1990, he retired from the United States Postal Service at the age of 55 after 30-plus years as a letter carrier. He enjoyed a fulfilling retirement, often joking with others about the idea of work. He would say “Work, what’s that, can you spell it for me.” In 2017, he received a Gold Card Membership from the National Association of Letter Carriers organization. In January 2024, Deacon Davis was also honored with a 60-year lapel pin from the National Association of Letter Carriers for his loyal and selfless dedication to the organization. Deacon Davis was cherished as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. Known for his kindness, humility, good character, integrity, and wisdom, he loved spending time with his family and taking walks at Cooper River Park every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with his loving daughter Patty. He didn’t let things stress him out or worry too much. He truly believed in Philippians 4:6-7 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” He loved watching game shows and Philadelphia Eagles football games. After the noon news, you would catch him as he would say, “Taking a Snooze.” One of his favorite euphemisms was “All Shucks.” Deacon Davis always had a story and words of wisdom to share with his friends and family (iron sharpens iron / Proverbs 27:17). After retiring from the Postal Service, he briefly drove a school bus for the Pennsauken Township Public School System. He and Deaconess Davis moved to Greenwood South Carolina in 1993, where he worked at Walmart in the “Photo Lab” and the Greenwood County Solid Waste Landfill. Everyone at Walmart called him “Mr. Gene” and one of his military photos still hangs on the wall that honors their Veterans. He continued to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible pertaining to “God’s Word.” This led him to heighten his knowledge by studying theology at Calvary Bible Institute, where he successfully completed a two-year course. Deacon and Deaconess Davis attended Mars Hill Baptist Church in Hodges South Carolina under “Watch Care.” It wasn’t long before he became a valued member of the Deacons Board. They served the Greenwood County Community by witnessing to others and visiting Senior Citizen Homes where they sang inspirational gospel, and hymnal songs to the residents. In 2002, they returned to Pennsauken New Jersey, welcomed warmly by family and friends. Deacon Davis was preceded in death by his wife Deaconess Ella Davis, daughter Jacqueline Harrison, and brothers Charles, Cornelius, and James Davis. Also, his grandson Antoine Davis and great-granddaughter Deja Harrison. He is survived by his children Patricia, Shirley, Eugene II (Jeanette), Pamala (Sherman Jr.), Brian Keith (Chanta Nicole), and Charles; sister Naomi West; sister-in-law Marlene Langston;18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the New Philippian Baptist Church Family along with lifelong friends David Williams and Rev. Lewis Crumety. Also, we cannot forget about his trusted and faithful companion “Gizmo who watched over him for more than 12 years. When leaving the house Deacon Davis would always say to Gizmo “Guard the House” and Gizmo never let him down! “To God be the Glory!”
