My heart goes out to the family. Carolyn was a special friend an colleague. She was always with her classmate and dear friend Dr. Linda Jacobson at the veterinary conferences I attended. Carolyn pulled me in and gave me a feeling of confidence after I graduated from Veterinary College and gave me so many nuggets of wisdom I still use today. She became a supportive alumnus and member of the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association. She and Howrhu attended our Tuskegee Veterinary programs and they would share with me the history of their life in Tuskegee in the late 60s and early 70s. I will always remember those stories. Carolyn was a trailblazer with a very supported husband by her side, another trailblazer.
On behalf of the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association we send our condolences to the family and will keep you in our prayers.

Q: How did you meet Dr. Carolyn?
A: I am her adopted son Jim Randolph Self fifth biological child of her late niece Jacqueline Gunter Moreland. I reside in Florida and my fondest memory of her is when I was a child her and I would on some Friday evenings sit on the bed and watch the television shows Dallas,Dynasty, and Falcon Crest while dining on pizza and Heineken beer. It was with her sharing such special moments of paternal bonding in time that i as her oldest living adopted son will always cherish. Rest well mom.

I am so sad to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your Mom and soul mate was a wonderful human being and a fantastic role model. You know, she always beamed, always smiled. I had no idea that she was sick, but I'm sure she fought with courage, grace, and prayer. I'm so glad you guys decided to come to Jersey and CVH and glad it remained in the family and that we are family.
Love you, Janet Fittipaldi

I met Dr. Self when I first started working at Collingswood Veterinary Hospital as a vet tech, when I first got out of college! She was such an inspiration to me and I was so impressed with how kind, knowledgeable, and caring she was with all her animal patients...and their owners! I learned so much from her, she made me laugh, and every day I worked and learned from her was amazing!!! Dr. Self always jokingly called me "Sunbeam", as I wore my hair tied back in a ponytail like the girl on the Sunbeam bread wrapper-we had so many laughs when she called me that!! Dr. Self also inspired me to get my first Doberman, as I fell in love with her Dobie that she used to bring to work! Because of her, I had 2 wonderful Dobies in my life that gave me such love!! I have so so many precious memories of time spent with Dr. Self...she took excellent care of all my beloved pets, and I was truly blessed to call her my friend!!!

Dr. Self was a fantastic Veterinarian, always so patient with the animals and kind to their owners. While we only worked with her 1 day a week, we grew very fond of her and she will be very sadly missed. My prayers are with her husband and family.

Q: What will you never forget about Dr. Carolyn?
A: I will never forgot how kind and patient Doc Self was. She treated everyone equally and never ever looked down on a client or an employee. I am so fortunate to have learned and worked for one of the best veterinarian ever. Thanks Dr. Self because without your mentorship I would not be the veterinarian that I am today.

Our hearts go out to the Self Family in this time of sorrow. To me, Dr. Self was more than just an extraordinary boss; she was a guiding light and a mother figure. She sparked in me the drive to excel not only professionally as a veterinarian but also personally as a wife, mother, and Christian. Her spirit and teachings will continue to live within each of us. Dr. Self will be deeply missed.
