Obituary of Rev. Lula P. Harris

Reverend Lula Pearl Harris was born on November 28th, 1929, to Jack and Cora Chambliss. She received her early education in grade school in Tuskegee, Alabama; Montgomery, Alabama; Savannah, Georgia; and Clevland, Ohio. She graduated high school at the Macon County Training School in Raba, Alabama, and continued her education at Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Arkansas. She earned an Associate degree from Cumberland County College in Vineland, New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Boulden Seminary of Camden, New Jersey.
She moved to Vineland in 1952 and married Jack Redfern (pre-deceased). They raised 7
children in their home, where they lived at 502 N. 4th Street, Vineland, New Jersey. She later married Arthaniel Harris. (pre-deceased) Rev. Harris worked as a substitute teacher in the Vineland school system for 9 years. She accepted the Lord at an early age and joined the Bethlemham Baptist church in the rural Tuskegee area. She strayed, but later, she renewed her fellowship with Jesus at the age of 40 and was called into the ministry. She evangelized for many years. Rev Harris later joined the Mt. Pisgah U.A.M.E church under Rev. Andrew A. Watson in Vineland. Where she served as a quarterly assignee for 8 years. She started a mission in the Millville area that lasted three years. She served as a quarterly assignee for 1 year at Spencer U.A.M.E church in Woodstown, NJ. In 1983, she was ordained Elder by Bishop Earl L. Huff.
Rev. Harris was appointed pastoral charge at the Mt. Zion U.A.M.E church, Albion, NJ, where she served faithfully for 14 years before retiring in May 2002. She has received many honors and rewards for faithful service. She served on the General Conference Lever church extension and evangelism committee and was President of the 2nd and 3rd district ministerial. She was president of the Atlantic Union of churches. Rev. Harris found much joy in helping others,visiting the sick, and working with children. After retirement, Rev. Harris was led by God to lead a new church, God’s Little Chapel, in Berlin, New Jersey, where she retired in 2023 and contiined her online ministry until she was called home. Her lifelong ministry led her to many places throughout the East Coast, from Florida to Rhode Island, preaching God’s word and encouraging souls to receive Christ as their Savior.
Rev. Lula Harris is survived by her brother, Evans Ligon, Tuskeegee, Alabama; four daughters and three sons-in-law, all of Vineland: Judy Jackson, Lula Herbert (John Herbert), Sharon Jamison (Eugene Jamison Sr.) and Cora Allen-Dekle (Shane Dekle), Texas; and Fifteen Grandkids, Waltmeka, Devone, Otis, Walter, Judine, Rashemia, Regis, James, Jacob, Eugene Jr, Sharon, Jonathan, Breon, Jaxsen, 32 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, 2 Godchildren, a goddaughter Tasha and godson BJ along with a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends that were dear to her heart.
She was pre-deceased by her three children, Anthony Chambliss, Jacqueline Jackson,
Walter Jackson, and two granddaughters, Nora Watson and Victoria Allen-Taylor.
